[HENRY III]. [SCHOMBERG (Gaspard de)]. Deed... - Lot 310 - Ader
[HENRY III]. [SCHOMBERG (Gaspard de)]. Deed relating to an obligation of 133,333 ecus, part of which is owed to Gaspard de Schomberg, Count of Nanteuil, "feltmareschal", made for the benefit of Henri III In French, deed on parchment signed "Henry" and countersigned "Brulart" [Pierre Brulart], dry seal, coat of arms of France France, Paris, 22 March 1581 Dimensions : 292 x 260 mm Beautiful signature of King Henry III: "An tesmoing de quoy elle a voullu signer icelluy de sa propre main et m'a commandé de le contresigner". Cash-flow problems were at the centre of the French monarchy's preoccupations, particularly under Henri III. Annuities and obligations granted or imposed on the members of the council are proof of the financial fragility of the King of France. On this subject, see O. Poncet, "Une utilisation nouvelle de la rente constituée au XVIe siècle: les membres du conseil au secours des finances d'Henri III", in Bibliothèque de l'Ecole des chartes, 1993 (151-2), pp. 307-357. Gaspard de Schomberg born Caspar von Schönberg (1540-1599), Count of Nanteuil, was a statesman and warrior in the service of France, of Saxon origin. One of Henry III's "mignons", Schomberg was sent to the German principalities when the Duke of Anjou (future King Henry III) was chosen as King of Poland by the Diet. He accompanied his candidate, the Prince of Anjou, as marshal to Poland. When the Prince of Anjou became King of France, Schomberg was appointed King's Counsellor and then made Count of Nanteuil in 1578. He was again sent to Germany by the king in 1585, but men from Guise prevented him from doing so and had him arrested. Subsequently, Schomberg supported the conversion of Henry IV to Catholicism, as well as the preparation of the Edict of Nantes. He was appointed superintendent of finance in 1594 and died in Paris in 1599.
