LOUŸS (Pierre) - VIDAL (Pierre).
The Adventures of King Pausole. New edition.
Paris : A. Blaizot, 1906. - In-4, 277 x 208 : (3 ff.), IV pp., (1 f.), 302 pp, (2 ff.), illustrated cover. Dark blue morocco, boards decorated with a large frame of gilt roulettes and fillets as well as a gilt crown at the corners, large gilt composition in a diamond shape formed by small gilt irons in the centre, spine decorated with nerves, dark blue morocco frame inside, decorated with gilt fillets and motifs, gilt head, untrimmed, cover preserved (Otto Schulze & Cie in Edinburgh).

Beautiful edition printed at 376 copies, illustrated with 82 colour compositions by the painter and illustrator Pierre VIDAL (1849-1913?), including 41 chapter headings and 41 culs-de-lampe. In addition, there are 41 coloured lettering, often historiated. The author's preface is here in the original edition.

One of 325 copies on Rives vellum paper (n° 206).

A very fine copy in a Scottish binding by Otto Schulze and company, made for the collector John R. Menzies. It is enriched by a small L.A.S. from Pierre Louÿs, 1 page in-12, to his "Dear Georges", perhaps his brother, dated March 1907. He "does not dare to write a dedication on this beautiful copy". Apparently there is no mention of this copy since on the top of the letter is written in another hand the indication "Japon HC".
Spine slightly faded. Some minor foxing.
Provenance: John R. Menzies, with bookplate.
