TOUSSAINT (Franz) - AGHION (Janine). - Lot 634
TOUSSAINT (Franz) - AGHION (Janine). Grains of pepper. Paris : André Delpeuch, 1927. - In-8, 255 x 186 : 154 pp, (5 ff. 2 last blank), 8 plates, printed cover. Black box, first cover decorated with a large rectangle of orange chagrin in which are drawn two eyes and two eyebrows in white and black box, surmounted by a horizontal band of black box pierced with orange chagrin circles, smooth spine decorated with the title and the name of the author in orange letters, lining and endpapers of orange paper decorated with a decoration of white pastilles with repetition, not trimmed, cover preserved, black cloth slipcase. First edition printed at 450 copies. This is one of the emblematic works of the Art Deco period, illustrated with 23 black, blue, green, orange or sanguine compositions in the text and on the full page, as well as 8 stencils outside the text, by the painter and illustrator Janine AGHION (1894-1982). This artist worked with the stylist Paul Poiret in the Martine studio and collaborated with the magazine Le Goût du jour. She was very influenced by the work of Kees Van Dongen, to whom she was close and with whom she exhibited her work. This influence is perfectly revealed in the illustration of this book where the similarities in the style of the two artists are sometimes deceptive. One of the 400 numbered copies on Marais vellum, dedicated by the author to Jean Costrejean: To // Jean Costrejean, // these stories that one finds, I // don't know why, audacious, and which, // in any case, are preferable // to those of politics... // Franz ToussaintVery nice copy in an original binding signed MCR, which most certainly refers to Martine Clamagirand-Roth . It is enriched with the subscription form glued at the head and an original drawing by Janine Aghion, in pencil, Indian ink and white highlight, signed "JA" in blue. This drawing represents a seated woman putting on her shoes. It is very rare to find this book so well bound. A perfectly preserved copy. Only the covers are lined with Japanese paper and the binding has not kept the flaps or the spine. Provenance: Jean Costrejean, with a letter from the author.
