Georges MICHEL (Paris 1763 - 1843) Landscape... - Lot 53 - Ader
Georges MICHEL (Paris 1763 - 1843) Landscape at the presumed Château de Dammartin Paper mounted on canvas 27 x 32 cm Inscription on the reverse of the frame "Georges Michel - Le Château de Dammartin" Louis XVI period frame, resealed Provenance: Calmels Cohen sale (according to a label on the reverse of the frame). We thank Michel Schulman for his help in describing this lot. He is at the disposal of the buyer to write a certificate which will be charged to him The castle of Dammartin is mentioned from the 10th century, on the basis of an existing fortress. It is successively the seat of the lordship of Antoine de Chabannes, Count of Dammartin, in the early fifteenth century before being acquired by the Constable Anne de Montmorency in 1554. However, it was quickly abandoned in favor of the palace that he built in Ecouen. The castle then fell into neglect and its walls were used as a stone quarry. At the time of our painting the site is very damaged. Under the Second Empire, the mayor of Dammartin Hubert Lavolée bought it and created a bucolic walk around the ruins. Nothing remains of the castle today.
