Among the cards, the jack of clubs is Talleyrand as "Clopineau" with political zodiac signs at the top; the queen is "Gazette" and the king of clubs is "Débats" showing the publisher carrying two large bags inscribed Débats and Empire with two donkeys in the background. The cards for the trump heart show three popular newspapers: "Figaro", "Minerve" and "Constitutionnel". On the column (king of hearts) we read: "Constitutional Charter. Freedom of the Press. Individual freedom. Law of elections. Tolerance.» For jack of spades, Chateaubriand is "Bazile" in ecclesiastical costume: he hides a Jesuit's cap under his robe and a braying donkey at his feet; the queen of spades is "Quotidienne," an old woman holding a book inscribed "Daily Christian Thought"; the king of spades is represented as Conservateur, a Jesuit with a sword in one hand and a torch in the other. For heart, the knave is Don Quixote; the queen is "Letters from Normandy" and the king is a brass head on a pedestal with flags of various political parties and the title "Monitor."
