BIBLE. Biblia sacra vulgatæ editionis. Cologne... - Lot 103 - Ader
BIBLE. Biblia sacra vulgatæ editionis. Cologne : heirs of Bernhard Wolter (Bern. Gualteri), 1647. - 6 volumes in-24, 95 x 49: title, (32 ff.), title, 413 pp. (1 blank f.); title, 528 pp.; title, 558 pp. (1 blank f.); title, 632 pp.; title, 559 pp.; 93 pp, (77 ff.). Red morocco, gilt fillet on the edges of the boards, spine ribbed with gilt fillets, red morocco lining decorated with a repeating pattern of a double phi and a cross of Lorraine, the whole framed with a gilt roulette, gilt edges (binding of the second half of the 17th century). Delaveau-Hillard, Bibles imprimées du XVe au XVIIIe siècle, n° 1032. Rare small edition of this Latin bible in the Sixtoclementine version, illustrated with 6 engraved titles, of which 5 at the head of the first 5 volumes and one for the Pentateuch appearing in the first volume after the first 32 unpaginated leaves . Only the title of the last volume is printed. Copy ruled in red, in a lined binding, bearing on the counterpads a Lorraine cross and a double phi repeated. It was apparently made in the second half of the 17th century, around 1670-80. It is quoted by Hobson in his book French and Italian collectors and their bindings, illustrated from examples in the library of J. R. Abbey (Oxford, 1953, notice 39). He states that the person for whom this binding was made, undoubtedly a member of the house of Lorraine, is not identified; he also indicates that this type of decoration was then out of fashion in Paris but remained in vogue in Lorraine. A copy with precious provenances, having been successively part of the collection of Mortimer L. Schiff and of John Roland Abbey. Bindings restored, most of the headpieces having been rebound and some hinges reinforced, corners slightly dulled. A provenance mark has been cut on each of the titles appearing at the head of the volumes; the lacks have been restored. Provenance: Mortimer L. Schiff, with bookplate (cat. 6 December 1938, no. 1372). - Johan Roland Abbey, with bookplate (cat. June 1967, no. 1677).
