FISCHER VON ERLACH (Johann Bernhard). Leipzig, 1725. - Oblong folio, 389 x 530. Stiff vellum, spine ribbed and decorated, spotted edges (contemporary binding). Second edition after the one given in Vienna in 1721. this work is the work of one of the leaders of the Austrian baroque Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723) . It is one of the very first texts to provide a theoretical approach to architecture. Like the first, this edition is bilingual, French-German, and includes 5 books: Some Ancient Buildings, Jewish, Egyptian, Syrian, Persian & Greek. - Some ancient Roman buildings, less known. - Some Buildings of the Arabs & Turks; as also of the modern Persian, Siamese, Chinese, & Japanese Architecture. - Some Buildings of the Author's Invention, & Design. - Various Ancient, Aegyptian, Greek, Roman, & Modern Vases: with Some of the Author's Invention. There is an engraved title, an engraved epistle, dated 1721, 5 engraved false titles, 25 leaves of printed text and 86 plates, 22 in the first book, 15 in the second, 15 in the third, 21 in the fourth and 13 in the fifth. This edition was published by the author's son from the original copperplates. It was at the time "the most varied collection of picturesque architectures, according to the 18th century definition (referring to the word "painting"). It evokes a journey through the architectures of all countries and all times, similar to that offered by the manufactures of gardens: nymphs, tombs, obelisks, vases...".These images," concluded Marian Morelowsky, "gathered from the four corners of the world, seemingly so irreconcilable, demonstrate Fischer's ability to recast everything into reconciled and previously unrecognized groupings" (Pierre Saddy, Fischer von Erlach: La voute percée d'étoiles, in: Austriaca, No. 12, L'Architecture autrichienne, May 1981, p. 19). A copy enriched, after 1750, with 22 engravings of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, completing the iconography of the book, bound or pasted down. They were certainly added by the Marquis de Migieu, a Burgundian bibliophile living in the castle of Savigny-les-Beaune, whose signature, accompanied by the date 1766, appears on the second back cover. The copy belonged at the beginning of the 20th century to Martin Bormann (1900-1945), Hitler's adviser and one of the most powerful men of the Third Reich, whose stamp "Eigentum Reichsleiter Bormann" appears next to the signature of the Marquis de Migieu. Hinges cracked, first box damaged and missing, corners dulled, cuts on the edges. Folds to the first leaves, tears to plate XIII of the second part and to the last 5 plates, with occasional damage to the engraving. Plate 6 of book 5 has been bound in error at the end of the fourth book. Last engraving doubled. Some foxing. Provenance: Marquis de Migieu, with signature. - Martin Bormann, with stamp on the second lining.
