MATISSE (Henri) - REVERDY (Pierre). Les Jockeys camouflés. Paris : La Belle Édition, [1918]. - In-4, 246 x 220 : (25 ff.), printed cover. Grey tan spotted morocco, cold fillet along the edge of the first board, framing a composition made of two pieces of exotic wood leaves at the top and bottom, surrounding two half circles facing each other, slightly offset from each other, each composed of a sheet of exotic wood on which is glued a piece of elephant leather also in a semicircle, title of the book affixed vertically in beige letters between the two semicircles, smooth spine, dark brown suede lining and endpapers, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, grey spotted morocco spine folder, slipcase (A. Lobstein 1999). First edition at 343 copies, of this collection of 3 poems by Pierre Reverdy, each printed in a different colour (green, orange and blue). It is illustrated with 5 unpublished drawings by Henri MATISSE, reproduced in black on full page. The author and the artist disapproved of this edition printed by François Bernouard. Reverdy then asked his friend Paul Birault to reprint it in a corrected version in black. The latter, printed in only 105 copies, was completed on 30 December 1918 and was the "only one approved" by the author. One of 300 copies on Arches laid paper, superbly bound by Alain Lobstein and perfectly preserved. Provenance: Prochian, with ex-libris. - Ex-libris A.L.
