British light cavalry officer saber. Handle covered with stingray with silvered copper filigree. Gilt and chased bronze mounting. Long-skirted pommel with lion's head, single-branch hilt with the numeral "GR" under a royal crown. Openwork plate. Strongly curved blade with flat back engraved "RICHd JOHNSTON 68 St JAMES LONDON" and counter-edge, flat sides, engraved with the large royal arms, the numeral GR, scrolls, Britannia and an allegory of Justice, trophies of arms and Renommée. Leather scabbard with three chased, cut and gilded bronze fittings decorated with laurel friezes. Signed "R JOHNSTON late BLAND & FOSTER Sword Cutler & Bett Mideer to his MAJESTY 68 St James Strt LONDON" Two bracelets and two rings. A.B.E. About 1810-1820. Blade does not fit completely into the scabbard. Richard Johnston, British forger, located at this address from 1798-1838.
