Alphonse OSBERT (1857-1939 )Woman holding... - Lot 68 - Ader
Alphonse OSBERT (1857-1939 )Woman holding a cup, study of clothing for The Source, one of the two decorations of the hall of the thermal establishment of VichyThree pencils. Signed and dedicated on the lower right. Captioned on the top right " Study for the spring, mural painting of the Thermal baths of Vichy " Signed, titled and numbered " 912 " on the back on the mount. 61 x 27 cmWe thank Mrs Véronique Dumas for the information contained in this notice . This drawing is referenced in the Catalogue Raisonné of Madame Dumas under the n° 1217. It is a nude study for the woman holding a cup, located in the left part of The Source, next to the woman leaning against a tree. This drawing is characteristic of the detail studies that precede the large-scale decorations. It is part of a whole series of studies that consist in detailing the attitudes and gestures of each of the figures that are part of the two compositions. The figure is first drawn naked and then with the garment or drapery he is to wear in the final setting. The young woman wears a simple tunic belted at the waist, typical of Osbert's symbolism, which shuns reality and ignores the fashion of the time, preferring to evoke an ancient world. This drawing is dedicated to his old friend Henri Clouard, who wrote an article about the painter in 1957.
