Édouard VUILLARD (1868-1940 )Self-portrait in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, 1897-1899Oil on board. Stamped lower left (Lugt 909a). (Small hole in the head). 27 x 29 cmExhibition : Face à face, l'Autoportrait de Cézanne à Bonnard, Le Musée Bonnard, Le Cannet, 26 June - 3 October 2021, reproduced in the catalogue p. 180. "The self-portrait at Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, never shown before and which we date to 1897-1899, appears to be a realistic incision at the end of the Nabi experience . Most of the works of the period remain schematic and retain this aesthetic of simplified lines which still spills over into the first years of the following century. But a tendency towards naturalism, towards perfect objectivity, from him at the end of the decade makes no secret of the disarray that assails him, as evidenced by his correspondence with Vallotton, to whom he dares to confide his distress. "Everything is going badly. I am working hard to keep my spirits up, which are quite low. [...] There really is darkness to be conjured up". And "the days of stagnation", which Vuillard still evokes, are not only allusions to these financial worries, but also to a sentimental disorder that cannot be resolved. Misia's divorce from Thadée Natanson, and the ensuing estrangement, paradoxically contributed to Vuillard's regaining a sense of calm and moral stability in the early years of the 20th century.
