Marcelo POGOLOTTI (1902-1988 )The Steel Factory, 1935Indian ink. Signed and dated lower right. 30 x 47,5 cmProvenance : Collection of Dr. P., ophthalmologist of the artist, Paris . Attached is a correspondence of 6 postcards from Pogolotti sent to Doctor P. This work is part of the series Notre temps that Pogolotti produced between 1930 and 1931 . It "heralds a radical change in his painting, from futurism to social commentary" (Roberto Cobas Amate in Cuba Art et histoire de 1868 à nos jours, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Hazan, 2008, p. 142). Pogolotti writes about this series: "I have undertaken a series of works entitled Our Time, in which I look at the present with a gaze that has been practiced in observing all aspects of current events. I think I succeeded, insofar as it was necessary to saturate myself with content that would feed my new works... There is no doubt that the drawings have a propaganda bias, but my intention was not, far from it, to stick to that, even if great medieval art is clearly propaganda art. Art can express the feelings and thoughts of an era without being heavily didactic or propagandistic, although the transmission of a message has never diminished it. In an era as agitated and anguished as the one we are living through, it is nevertheless necessary that its most raw, acerbic and violent manifestations multiply." (Marcelo Pogolotti, in Del barro y las voces, Havana, Editorial Letras Cubanas, 2004, p. 261). The drawing presented here comes from the collection of Pogolotti's Parisian ophthalmologist. Unfortunately, the artist lost his eyesight in 1938, the year in which the Carrefour Gallery offered him a solo exhibition. We would like to thank Mrs. Graziella Pogolotti, the artist's daughter, for confirming the authenticity of this work and for the information she has provided us with.
