Henri MICHAUX (1899-1984 )Composition, circa... - Lot 193 - Ader
Henri MICHAUX (1899-1984 )Composition, circa 1946-47Ink and watercolor. Monogrammed lower right. 30.5 x 23.5 cmProvenance : Jules Supervielle Collection. This work will be included in the Catalogue Raisonné being prepared by Micheline Phankim, Rainer Michael Mason and Franck Leibovici. "There is a certain inner ghost that one should be able to paint and not the nose, the eyes, the hair that are on the outside... often like soles. A fluidic being that doesn't correspond to the bones and the skin on top, that we see at once, friends, enemies, lovers, relatives, acquaintances, and that makes us recognize at once how the person "goes" in this precise moment, not two minutes later, a character that finally appears to all the sensitive except, insignificant misfortune, precisely to the painters. If I liked Isms and became the captain of some individuals, I would start a school of painting, FANTOMISM (or "psychologism"). The face has features. I don't care. I paint the features of the double (which does not necessarily need nostrils and can have a weft of eyes)". (Henri Michaux, En pensant au phénomène de la peinture, Peintures et dessins, Paris, Les Éditions du Point du jour, 1946. This text was also reprinted in Henri Michaux, Passages, Paris, Gallimard, 1950).
