- Emmanuel CHABRIER. L.A.S., [November 1879], to Louis Gallet; 1 1/4 pages in-fol. in purple ink. [79-9] Detail of a project for a comic opera, Le Sicilien, based on Molière's play, Le Sicilien ou l'Amour peintre. [Louis Gallet (1835-1898) wrote numerous librettos, notably for Gounod, Saint-Saëns and Massenet]. He would have liked to see it: "In an hour's time we would fix our business. I know the play by heart: I can see a lot of things to set to music, but the role of Climène would, it seems to me, require more importance; she only arrives for the denouement, and it seems to me that a duet with Isidore would be piquant. Chabrier then drew up, "at a glance", the details of the first 13 scenes: "Scene I - chorus (men and transvestites) Hali's aria and reprise of the chorus / Scene II - Dialogue - and Adraste's aria / Scene III - Serenade (to be arranged for the chorus)", etc. "From Scene XIV to the finale (Scene XIX) of the Senator & the danced reprise of the Turkish song, if you like, there is, it seems to me, quite a lot to rework"... Then he quotes Hali's verses in scene XII, and indicates: "There are pieces that must necessarily be in the work: an aria by Isidore, an aria by Hali, an aria by Adraste - a Duo by Isidore & Adraste (we'll wait for it) - another Duo, plus the ensemble pieces, introduction, grand 4or, serenade and Turkish song, plus the finale. There are 8 or 9 pieces, and they must be distributed with discernment. You know all this better than I do" ....
