- Emmanuel CHABRIER. L.A.S., Paris 5 May 1884, to a "dear and illustrious colleague" [Franco Faccio]; 2 1/2 pages in-8. [84-7] Beautiful letter to the Italian composer and conductor Franco Faccio (1840-1891), in response to his invitation to the Concerti Popolari in Turin for the Esposizione Generale Italiana. He would have been happy to go to Turin: "Alas, Turin is far away, the travel expenses are considerable, and moreover, I cannot delay in leaving for the country to undertake some work commissioned by Lamoureux, in view of the next season. - When will I go to Italy? I don't know: for that I would have to have a work, either opera or ballet; if, thanks to your high influence, you had been willing to speak on my behalf, perhaps there would have been a way to arrange the matter. [...] In terms of biographical details, dear colleague, I have very little to tell you. I am still one of the newcomers, although my rare hair is turning grey in my forties; you should spare me some of yours: first of all, it is black and you seem to have enough for two. I have my opera of Gwendoline, with Catulle Mendès, in my boxes; this opera awaits the good pleasure of a director; I have piano music, for two and four hands. In short, my baggage is light, since I took up music rather late, having stayed here for a long time in the offices of the Ministry of the Interior. So you see, my dear friend, that there is nothing here to make your beautiful compatriots dream; that would have been very pleasant for me, but I must give it up. On this note, my dear master, go to España and think of me!
