- Emmanuel CHABRIER. L.A.S. "Emmanuel Ch", La Membrolle 14 July 1890, [to Henry Verdhurt]; 4 pages in-8. [90-88] About the project to revive the Théâtre Lyrique in the Eden-Théâtre under the direction of Verdhurt; Chabrier hoped that Gwendoline would be performed there. "Well, dear friend, and these lawyers, and these solicitors, and these notaries, [...] and the casing! - And the signatures! Where is all this? [...] It must not be easy, at this time, to form a troupe, a choir, an orchestra; all that dances, sings and plays is scattered and scurries about in casinos and other absolutely delightful places". Chabrier recommends Thibault, who could play first violin and serve as second or third conductor. "He is a man who has missed the boat to the great theatres, but he has qualities of vigour, he is a resourceful man, a little fat but with a firm grip. I believe that with the addition of the solid music played at the Conservatoire, he could easily strip the conductor of operettas and that in the presence of a modern score he would not look too bad. In any case, he is very ardent, he has practice, I could say he is practice, and in genre th., even sub genre, quarter genre, I have always found him superior to his dark mission. [...] he has serious gifts as a conductor. [...] he is an arm, more of a packager than a pawn [...] he is a man of the moment, he has all the audacity and doesn't mind breaking his neck; it is not bad sometimes to have on hand audacities that fortune does not always judge from the rest"...
