Rare letters from the end of the life of this Zutist musician-poet [Chabrier was the treasurer of the funds from the lottery and then from the sale of paintings (May 14, 1881) to help Cabaner, who had gone to Amélie-les-Bains to treat his phthisis, but who died on August 3]. - He thanked Chabrier for serving as his treasurer and asked for money to pay the rent on his bad piano; he had to stay locked in his room "because of the continual need to spit", and every day he addressed God, "as if he existed, with more filthy insults than he would receive in a hundred years from all the damned combined. The piano, far from harming my bronchitis, relieves me. So I lumber on, I musicaille all my days!!! either to compose, or to learn by heart and by the fingertips my old and new compositions.
