Anton RUBINSTEIN (1829-1894). 2 L.AS., January-March 1867, to violinist Henry Vieuxtemps; 2 and 2 1/2 pages in-8, envelopes. St. Petersburg 7 January. "You are rich - you have reached your goal musically - would you not decide to come back here - and accept a place at the Conservatoire? You would only have to work 12 hours a week (including a quartet class), participate in 10 concerts of the Russian Music Society in the orchestra, and 6 quartet sessions - that's all - these jobs would last nine months of the year [...] the rest of the time you are free. - What would be your conditions!!?"... Rubinstein is director of the Conservatory, but he intends to leave "Petersburg in May and never come back". He adds that Wieniawski has left the Conservatory... Paris March 23. He is sorry not to find him, although he had brought "the cross of St Lazarus and Maurice that the King of Sardinia has sent you". He has to write to Count Nigra to thank the King.
