Philippe BOESMANS (born 1936). Autograph musical manuscript - Lot 206
Philippe BOESMANS (born 1936). Autograph musical manuscript signed, L'Eau douce du pardon; title and 27 leaves 42 x 30 cm. Orchestral score of this cantata on a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke. Commissioned by the Société Philharmonique de Bruxelles and Bruxelles 2000, it was premiered on April 1, 2001 at the Lunatheater in Brussels, during the Ars Musica Festival, by the ensemble Ictus and the mezzo-soprano Sophie Karthäuser, conducted by Georges-Élie Octors, and published the same year by Jobert. [WD14]. Boesmans set to music a "fragment of Vergers et Roses 14" by Rainer Marie Rilke, in French: "Ce soir mon cœur fait chanter des anges"... sung by the soloist; the instrumental ensemble includes: flute, oboe, 2 clarinets, bassoon, 2 horns, trumpet, trombone, 2 percussionists, harp, piano (and celesta), 2 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, and double bass. "L'eau douce du pardon is Philippe Boesmans' first attempt with the French language, apart from La Passion de Gilles. The composer started from the poems that Rilke wrote directly in French [...] Boesmans thus pursues his path on the planes of affect, without worrying in any way about modernity or the avant-garde. He is more concerned with the correct expression of human feelings than with the creation of a musical object that responds at all costs to aesthetic laws. In the same way, Boesmans does not impose a formal framework on his composition. In this sense, he is similar to Debussian freedom" (Valérie Dufour). The piece lasts 25 minutes and has 262 bars, with the repetition of pages 5/28 and 6/29 (which bear the double numbering). The manuscript is carefully written in Indian ink on Sünova tracing paper with 36 lines. It bears the dedication "to Evelyne Sax" at the top. At the head of the music, Boesmans has copied the text of the poem (2 quatrains).
