Serge NIGG (1924-2008). Autograph musical manuscript signed, - Lot 292
Serge NIGG (1924-2008). Autograph musical manuscript signed, Le Chant du Dépossédé, 1964; [2]-90 leaves 37 x 27.5 cm (margin of last leaf a little trimmed in the plate). Orchestral score of this cantata for orchestra, baritone and narrator, with poetic notes by Stéphane Mallarmé. Commissioned by the Strasbourg Festival, it was premiered there on June 25, 1964 by Jacques Herbillon (baritone), Roger Pigaut (narrator), the Radio-Symphonic Orchestra of Strasbourg, conducted by Charles Bruck. It was recorded in 1981 by Alan Opie, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, conducted by Marc Soustrot (Chant du Monde, " Musique Française d'Aujourd'hui "). The orchestra includes 3 flutes (and piccolo), 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, 3 bassoons (and contrabassoon), 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, 5 percussionists, harps, celesta, piano, and the strings Duration 26 minutes approximately. The work was conceived after Stéphane Mallarmé's poetic notes following the death of his son Anatole in 1879, published under the title Pour un Tombeau d'Anatole by Jean-Pierre Richard (Seuil, 1961); the texts are divided between the baritone and the reciter. This Chant du dépossédé is divided into three parts: I Le Cri funèbre: "O terreur"...; II Poetry of Illness: 1 Prefiguration of the Essential Being (reciter), 2 Dialogue with Death: "or, Death: Why do I linger"..., 3 Monologue of the Cemetery (reciter), 4 Vertigo of the Sepulchre: "Well! yes, it's all there"...; III The Reverie of the Empty Room: "Time of the Empty Room"... The manuscript is carefully noted in Indian ink on 32-line tracing paper. Attached is Nigg's autograph manuscript of Mallarmé's texts; and the engraved tracings of the vocal-piano score.
