Captain Jules Alexandre Milz's missions within the Belgian colonial empire were twofold, both political and geographical. It was a question of establishing posts in the less accessible areas of the Congo, where the Arab presence was still important and which escaped the control of the central power. But also to determine the course of the Uélé river, a tributary of the Ubangi. The mission of Léon Roget, which Milz prepared and accompanied, represents one of the important diplomatic and military interventions of the period. These albums provide an extremely rare testimony of the villages of the region and their populations, immortalizing scenes of life of which we generally have knowledge only by the texts.
