Sizes: from 11.4 x 8.4 to 19.6 x 14.4 cm Hugo Bernatzik is an Austrian anthropologist and photographer, founder of the concept of alternative anthropology, which is interested in the weakening of indigenous cultures through contact with exogenous elements. He has produced a substantial body of photographic work during numerous trips and expeditions in Espain (1924), Egypt and Somalia (1925), in Soudan (1927), Portuguese Guinea (1930-1931), British Solomon Islands, British New Guinea, Bali (1932-1933), Burma, Thailand and Indochina (1936-1937). Hugo Bernatzik wanted to capture the cultural specificities of the indigenous peoples caught up in colonization, by documenting their traditional ways of life. As an independent ethnologist, and not a mandated official, he freely expressed his opposition to the local colonial authorities and financed his travels himself, through writing, publishing his photographs or giving lectures. All his negatives disappeared during the Second GWorld War, but a large number of his prints are now in the collections of theInstitut photographique Bonartes in Vienna. When he died in 1953, he left 47 albums containing some 16,000 contact sheets. This collection represents the most important private archive ofHugo Bernatzik's work.
