"On March 31, 1887, in Paris, André Antoine opened an associative stage, the Théâtre Libre, in response to the appeal made by Émile Zola seven years earlier. This theatre was intended to be free of the constraints of censorship, innovative and ambitious: it experienced nine difficult seasons and closed its doors in 1896. However, at the end of these nine years, seven of which were directed by André Antoine, the results were considerable: major foreign playwrights were performed in Paris (Hauptmann, Ibsen, Schnitzler), a generation of new French playwrights (Ancey, Brieux, Courteline, Curel, etc.) was born on stage, the Théâtre Libre troupe was recognized for its cohesion, and, above all, directing, as a federation of the parts that make up a performance, was established as an autonomous art. In founding the Théâtre Libre, André Antoine created, in a way, a model" (Preface by Philippe Baron to the collection entitled Le théâtre libre d'Antoine et les théâtres de recherche étrangers, 2007).
