Charles Méryon (1821-1868) Fishermen of the South Sea. 1850. Etching after Zeeman. 120 x 68. Delteil 15; Schneiderman 18. A very nice proof on chine appliqué, of the 1st state (of 2), before Méryon's full name, prior to the edition of L'Artiste (1864). Light scattered foxing. Remains of glue in the corners on the reverse. All margins. "M. Méryon had been extremely struck by the intimate feeling with which the sailor Reynier Zeeman knew how to imbue the spiritual etchings of the suite also published in 1650, under this title : " Recueil de plusieurs navires et paysages faits d'après le naturel ". As he had done for the "Views of Paris and its surroundings", M. Méryon studied with scrupulous care the brilliant and lively execution of the master, and knew how to appropriate its qualities." (Ph. Burty, "L'œuvre de M. Charles Méryon," Gazette des Beaux-Arts, vol. XIV, 1863, p. 527).
