[ENLUMINATION]. TrinitéSheet from a missal... - Lot 7 - Ader
[ENLUMINATION]. TrinitéSheet from a missal perhaps; verso of blank sheet . Ink and gouache on parchment (probably paint restoration, blue hanging; traces of glue on verso). Truncated coat of arms in left margin, shield quartered, in 2 azure a chevron Or with star Or in base; in 4, Or three wolf's heads Sable lampassed Gules [note that there is an escutcheon placed "over all" laid in heart on the quartered shield]; illuminated borders on gold and reserved backgrounds, colored acanthus leaves, flowers and fruit, zoomorphic hybrid in margin, painted cross in lower border. France, Picardy ?, Artois ?, circa 1500. size : 270 x 175 mmThis large illumination was probably intended to appear in a missal, perhaps in the Canon of the Mass . The Trinity is depicted as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, with the Father and Son seated on a bench with an architectural backrest with Renaissance decoration and a shell ornament. This miniature presents stylistic elements that allow comparisons with manuscripts produced north of Paris, in Picardy or in Artois. We are thinking, for example, of a book of hours associated with Thérouanne and Artois (London, Sotheby's, December 7, 1999, lot 47, Heures à l'usage de Thérouanne) or an isolated miniature with the initials C and M in the borders (Private collection). The identification of the truncated coat of arms in the left margin will certainly help to better locate this miniature, by revealing the first sponsor of the manuscript. Provenance : Handwritten mention in ink, To the Abbey of Breteuil (18th century writing). The Abbey Notre-Dame de Breteuil is a former Benedictine abbey located in the commune of Breteuil (Breteuil-sur-Noye), in the French department of Oise. At the time of its suppression in 1789, the abbey of Breteuil still possessed considerable domains, and its library was rich in precious manuscripts.
