Oblong format, 35 plates on paper laminated on boards mounted on tabs, title followed by a first plate with a printed piece "Le campylographe du P. Marc Dechevrens S.J. Observatoire St Louis à Jersey (Angleterre)", engraved mention on some plates "Campylographe - Dechevrens". Bound in black Russian leather (boards), with gilt inscriptions on the upper board : " Drawings mechanically traced by the Camylographe-Dechevrens ", leather reinforcement on the spine (epidermures, dull corners ; good interior condition). Dimensions : 425 x 325 mmRare collection of drawings drawn according to the ingenious invention of Marc Dechevrens, with scientific and artistic repercussions, happily combining art and mathematics . Marc Dechevrens (1845-1923) was a Swiss Jesuit and scientist, born in Thônex. From 1873 to 1887, he directed the Natural History Museum and Astronomical Observatory of Zikawei in China. A specialist in typhoons (he was nicknamed the "Father of Typhoons") and terrestrial magnetism, he created a centralized meteorological service in China. Professor of natural sciences at Saint-Hélier (Jersey), he founded and directed an observatory with a weather service in 1888-1891 at the Maison Saint-Louis. He was in Constantinople from 1891 to 1893, then resumed his scientific activities in Jersey until his death. The campylograph (from the Greek "kampylos", curved, folded) was a machine for drawing curves. It was invented by Marc Dechevrens around 1900. The machine was intended, among other things, to draw the trajectory of the planets seen from the earth but it allows to obtain many other curves. This device was acclaimed by mathematicians and scientists. Dechevrens had described his apparatus in the following article: Dechevrens (M.), "Le campylographe, machine à tracer des courbes", in Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des séances de l'Académie des sciences, 11 June 1900, no. 130, pp. 1661-1620. The following work appeared: Dechevrens (Marc), Le campylographe, Louvain, Imprimerie Polleunis & Ceuterick, 1901. On this device, see Apéry (François), " Le campylographe : une mécanique pour tracer les courbes ", in Tangente, 2018, pp. 42-43.
