FRANKLIN (Benjamin). Experiments and Observations on Electricity made in Philadelphia in AmericaParis, chez Durand, 1752. in-12, 24 pp.+ LXX pp. + [5] ff. non ch + 222 pp. + [15] ff. non ch. (tables), one folding plate at the end of the work, annotations in brown ink. Bound in full tan marbled calf, spine with 5 nerves partitioned and decorated with flowers, title-piece, red edges, marbled paper back-guards and end-papers (binding rubbed, corners dulled; some interior stains). Dimensions : 170 x 111 mmA note indicates : " The marginal notes are from the hand of Le Cat famous operator and demonstrator of surgery in Rouen. Known for his treatise on eyes and other works". Another mention " Bound in Rouen ". Claude-Nicolas Le Cat (1700-1768) was a surgeon and naturalist. Surgeon to Louis de Tressan, archbishop of Rouen, he became in 1731 chief surgeon of the Hôtel-Dieu of Rouen. In 1734 he began teaching anatomy and in 1738 he received the title of "professor and royal demonstrator in anatomy and surgery". He was also the inventor of the first hearing aid in 1757, so the annotations in this book are strictly contemporary with the translation of Franklin's work . It is interesting to see another scientist commenting on Franklin's discoveries, practicing them, and reacting by declaring after the experiment was completed: "False" or "Vray". Une grande figure de la chirurgie française", Mémoires / Fédération des sociétés d'histoire et d'archéologie de l'Aisne, 2005, pp. 11-43.
