(ff. 1-2v), followed by the first song : " O bienheureux mille fois l'enfant que le seigneur aime... ". These texts are taken from Jean Racine's last play, Athalie, commissioned by Madame de Maintenon for the demoiselles de Saint-Cyr. The musical setting of the choruses was entrusted once again to Jean-Baptiste Moreau who had already written that of Esther. Biblical tragedy in five acts by Jean Racine, Athalie was played for the first time at Saint-Cyr, in the presence of the king and the Grand Dauphin, on January 5, 1691. These were "private performances" without sets or costumes, the boarders of Saint-Cyr wearing their strict black uniform. We note in the Journal de Dangeau: "Friday 5, at Versailles. The king and Monseigneur went to Saint-Cyr in the afternoon, where there was a rehearsal of Athalie with the music. On the way back, the king went to Madame de Maintenon's at his usual place, and Monseigneur went to play at Madame la Duchesse's place. A revival took place at Court in 1702, three years after Racine's death, with Jean-Baptiste Moreau's choirs, on the occasion of the celebrations organized for the young Duchess of Burgundy. This one held the role of Josabeth, the duke of Orleans that of Abner, the president of Chailly that of Athalie, the count of Esparre that of Joas, and M. de Champeron that of Zacharie.
