[POETRY]. [ITALY]. BARUFFALDI (Girolamo)... - Lot 38 - Ader
[POETRY]. [ITALY]. BARUFFALDI (Girolamo) (1675-1755). Collection of Italian satirical poems, including several "Baccanale". In Italian, composite manuscript on paper. Italy, certainly Emilia-Romagna, Ferrara (?) or Cento (province of Ferrara, several pieces are written from Cento), some pieces dated 1703 to 1752 (approximately). Composite collection of 10 pieces + 30 pieces, collected and sewn together, of variable dimensions, all on paper, cursive writing in brown ink. Bound in full contemporary cardboard, smooth spine with ink inscription: "Baruffaldi Gir. Sen. Baccanali MSSI no. 171". Dimensions : 250 x 180 mm This may be Baruffaldi's composite copy, collecting from 1703 to 1752 his poems and especially his "Bacchanali" on which he worked all his life . Partly autograph (many pieces signed), this collection contains poetic pieces, several of which are called "Baccanale", a form of satirical poem that belongs to the so-called "dithyrambic" poetry. We know from the catalog of the Libri Sale (Sotheby's and Leigh, A Catalogue of the Extraordinary Collection of Splendid Manuscripts...Formed by M. Guglielmo Libri (London, 28 March 1859, lots 127-135, all autographs and declared unpublished) that a number of autograph manuscripts by Girolamo Baruffaldi were in circulation: "Girolamo Baruffaldi the elder was one of the most learned men of his time, alike distinguished for historical and classical knowledge. A life and a long list of his works, printed and manuscript, will be found in Mazzuchelli (Scrittori d'Italia, vol. II, part I, pp. 483-493)". There is a first partial edition of the Bacchanali, published in Venice in 1722, but many of the poems in the present partly autograph composite collection do not appear in it. Sixteen other Baccanali, dithyrambic poems, were also printed separately, from 1727 until 1750, then together, and joined to the first ten, to finish in all twenty-six Baccanali, with arguments to each one to indicate the subject appeared in Bologna in 1758 (3 vol. in-8°). Girolamo Baruffaldi (born in Ferrara in 1675, died in Cento in 1755) is an Italian priest, poet, playwright and historian of the XVIIIth century. After embracing the ecclesiastical career, Girolamo Baruffaldi studied archaeology and history, and devoted himself mainly to poetry. He was a professor of belles-lettres and vicar-general in Ferrara, and set up a small academy in his home under the title of the "Vigna". He also worked as an archivist as apostolic prothonotary (he was accused of forgery, having circulated falsified archives) before becoming dean of Pieve di Cento under the protection of Cardinal Lambertini (future Pope Benedict XIV). The titles announce a number of pieces delivered in the "Accademia degli Intrepidi". This Academy is the oldest cultural association in Ferrara. In 1604, on the initiative of Marquis Enzo Bentivoglio (1575-1639), the Accademia degli Intrepidi rented a public granary belonging to the Este family and commissioned Giovan Battista Aleotti (1546-1636) to design a new theater. This is the theater that represents the taste and culture of the Ferrarese civilization of the show at the highest level in the XVII century.
