[ALMANACH]. New & gallant almanac belonging... - Lot 47 - Ader
[ALMANACH]. New & gallant almanac belonging to Marie-Joséphine Vincent. Strenna to my Mistress. [Paris : Boulanger, 1782]. - In-24, 93 x 57. Red morocco, boards decorated with a trophy of musical instruments surrounded by flowers and foliage, surmounted by a basket of flowers, in a nice gilt frame decorated with garlands of leaves, smooth spine decorated, gilt edges (period binding). Very rare fashion almanac published by the dealer and gilder on leather and silk Boulanger. Not listed by Grand-Carteret, it is an almanac composed especially for one person, in this case a certain Marie-Joséphine Vincent, from sheets extracted from the Almanach galant des costumes français published in 1782 by Boulanger. The pagination is not followed. It begins with a sheet specially printed for the copy: "Almanach nouveau & galant appartenant à Marie-Joséphine Vincent. Strenna to my Mistress. While waiting for a more beautiful gift, I give you a new Almanac; It could sometimes be necessary for you; But while consulting it, always remember, That there is no month nor day, Where I do not think of you & only aspire to please you ". There are 16 figures of fashion accompanied by songs, all fully engraved. These plates have for legend : Dame de Cour en grand Etiquet - Dame en Pelisse, Chapeau en Soleil - Dame en Levite, Fourreau à l'angloise - Dame en Robe à l'angloise - M. l'Abbé - Le Bourgeois Marchand - L'Officier en Redingote verte, Galonnée en Or - L'Homme de Robe en Habit de Velours ciselé - Le Petit-Maître en Gillet blanc, Culotte de Nanquin - Le Financier en Habit de Velours Brodé en Or - Demoiselle habillée galament, Dressed in Pouf - Miss in Polonoise in Pouf - Lady in Deshabillé, Headdress with the peasant - Lady in Levite coiffed in Pouf gallant - Lady in Dress of Satin coiffed with the Peasant - Peasant of the Environs of Paris in Habit of Sundays. The Almanach galant as it was published, included two other captioned plates: Dame en Camisole de nuit qui se baigne and Dame mettant sa jarretière. They do not seem to have been chosen in the composition of this copy because they seem to present women a little too naked for the time. On the last leaf is the engraved advertisement of Boulanger. A very nice copy in decorated contemporary morocco, very well preserved. Some soiling to the leaves, restorations to the last two leaves with damage to the text.
