BERTRAND (Aloysius). Gaspard de la nuit, fantasies in the manner of Rembrandt and Callot. New edition, increased with pieces in prose and verse, taken from the newspapers and literary collections of the time, and preceded by an introduction, by Charles Asselineau. Paris: René Pincebourde; Brussels: Librairie européenne de C. Muquardt (et Poulet-Malassis), 1868. - In-8, ivory half-parchment, smooth spine, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Stroobants). Oberlé, "Auguste Poulet-Malassis", n° 840 and 841. Second edition of Aloysius Bertrand's masterpiece, published by Charles Asselineau . The original, very rare, was published in 1842 in Paris by Labitte. The edition was printed at 402 copies illustrated with a frontispiece by Félicien ROPS engraved in etching and printed on china. This work was to be the first of the "Collection de curiosités romantiques" published under the direction of Charles Asselineau, but it was the only volume published. A presentation of this collection can be found on the last page and on the back cover. One of 350 copies on Hollande paper (n° 55), complete with the two unnumbered leaves, the first bearing the red Malassis rooster mark and the second with the justification. Spine of the cover restored and missing.
