Two large black synthetic lacquer baluster vases inlaid with mother-of-pearl, Vietnam, 20th centuryOne with continuous decoration of a four-clawed dragon and a phoenix among clouds on the body and medallions around the neck showing characters playing music, playing go, practicing calligraphy or looking at the moon. The top of the neck is decorated with a stylized frieze and foliage. It rests on a wooden support with the same decorative scheme. The other is continuously decorated with couples of various birds (pheasant, peacock, gallinaceous and crane) on rocks, flowering branches and bamboo. Stylized friezes decorate the shoulder and the top of the neck, framing medallions representing a dog, a tortoise and a phoenix. It rests on a stand decorated with shou signs and stylized motifs.
