Paul Gauguin (1846-1903) Cicadas and Ants... - Lot 241 - Ader
Paul Gauguin (1846-1903) Cicadas and Ants - Souvenir de la Martinique. 1889. Zincography. 261 x 216. Mongan, Kornfeld and Joachim 5 A b. A very nice proof of the first edition made by Ancourt, on canary yellow vellum, the indentation of the zinc very visible. Tiny scattered freckles. Tiny ink spots in the lower margin. Light bands of oxidation at the edges of the folio. Minor tears and a 5 mm tear at the left edge. All margins [620 x 465]. Unknown edition (30 or 50 prints). Provenance: Succession Pierre HautotThis plate belongs to a suite of eleven engravings made in 1889 by Gauguin in the technique of zincography (a variant of lithography, on zinc plate) . This suite was exhibited at the Café des Arts held by Volpini. Gauguin and his friends exhibited there on the sidelines of the 1889 Universal Exhibition. The series remains known as the "Volpini Suite". The artist tackles different landscapes, peoples and cultures that he was able to study through his travels: in Martinique, in Brittany or in the South of France, in Arles. The rare first printing of these plates is done on this amazing canary yellow paper. Around 1900, the merchant Ambroise Vollard had a second print made on cream imitation japan, with about 50 prints. The work was inspired by Gauguin's stay in Martinique in 1887 with Charles Laval. The title is obviously inspired by the fables of La Fontaine. It evokes a scene from local life and applies a moral well known to his European contemporaries.
