Jean Veber (1868-1928) Thaïs - Athanaël (1st and last plates of a melody cover). 1893. Lithograph. 400 x 290. Veber and Lacroix 1. color print in gilt bronze ink. Very nice proof on thin vellum, dedicated in ink "Pour Paul" signed and dated "1894". A few scattered light foxing. Numerous fine folds broken at the edges of the sheet. These are illustration projects for the score by Jules Massenet. Thaïs is a lyrical comedy for which Massenet wrote the music. The text was composed of poems by Louis Gallet, after the novel by Anatole France. The edition of this score was envisaged by the Heugel company, which finally opted for a more sober subject, inspired by Egyptian profiles (of which the 2nd is however, like the two figures of our subject, a realistic, and even miserable, self-portrait of Jean Veber).
