Édouard PIGNON (1905-1993 )Beatings, 1960Ink and... - Lot 35 - Ader
Édouard PIGNON (1905-1993 )Beatings, 1960Ink and ink wash. Signed and dated lower right. 44.5 x 58 cm This work from the "Threshing" series was done in Filacciano, a village overlooking the Tiber plain about 60 kilometers from Rome . Pignon stayed there for the first time in 1958 on his way back from the Venice Biennale, where a room was dedicated to him in the French Pavilion. He returned there for three summers, invited by his friend Francesco Del Drago, to produce ink drawings that were to become the basis for works painted in his studio in Paris. In this series of ink and colored pencil drawings, Édouard Pignon wanted to capture the frenzy of the threshing rhythm and to capture, in his words, "the atmosphere that reigns around the threshing machine, the noise, the sun, the fluttering straw, the bales passing from fork to fork, the millstone being made, the hoist that lifts the straw, the rope that carries a bunch of young people". We thank Mr. Philippe Bouchet for confirming the authenticity of this work and for the information contained in this notice.
