Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750). The Art... - Lot 50 - Ader
Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750). The Art of the Four-Part Fugue (Paris, Vogt, [c. 1798]), in folio, green half-cornered vellum, 135 p., engraved music. Extremely rare French edition of Bach's last opus (BWV 1080), probably prior to the Swiss (Nägueli, Zurich, 1801) and German editions. The Paris address of the oboist and briefly music publisher François-Daniel Vogt ("Rue de la Michaudière 8 bis") is unknown to Devriès and Lesure, who state that Vogt is no longer to be found after 1799. Anik Devriès has listed various announcements of musical publications by Vogt in 1797 and 1799, but nothing afterwards. We can therefore consider this edition, which is particularly unknown, as having been published around 1798-1799, ten years after Vogt, a friend of Pleyel, had left Strasbourg for Paris; he had joined forces with the Widow Goulden in May 1797 for a few months, before reappearing on his own in 1799, and then disappearing. Signature of the owner at the top of the title page: " Charles du Moulin ".
