Scutari velvet panel, Ottoman Turkey, 19th centuryOld rose and sage green silk on a beige background, decorated with a floral medallion flanked by four scrolls and bordered at both ends by two buildings with nave and cupola tower placed in front of a palm tree. Dim. at sight : 108 x 61 cmInk stains , wear. Frame. Provenance : Indjoudjian Frères, Paris, 1951. this type of velvet was used as a cushion top for couches . The name "Scutari" appeared at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century in the literature in reference to the Istanbul neighborhood of Scutari, now Üsküdar, where these velvets were made, and not to the Albanian city of Scutari, now Shkoder.
