Dish decorated with a fight between a lion... - Lot 252 - Ader
Dish decorated with a fight between a lion and a dragon, Iran qâjâr, end of 19th centurySiliceous ceramic with polychrome painted decoration under transparent glaze of a fight between a lion and a dragon surrounded by a wavy stem decorated with leaves and a large compartmentalized border decorated with four-lobed medallions. Diameter : 33 cm Chips on the border and on the heel, cracks. The iconography of the fight between a lion and a dragon is common in Islamic art. Traditionally, it is interpreted as a metaphor for the eclipse of the sun, the dragon being considered a creature that swallows stars according to al-Qazwini, while the lion symbolizes the sun. In the context of Iran, a predominantly Shiite country, the lion may allude to 'Ali, the lion of God dominating the dragon, which is then seen as a Sunni adversary. Bibliography : - BERNUS-TAYLOR, M.
