Antoine Louis Roussin is one of the pioneers of photography in the Antilles
.
A military man, he was posted to Reunion Island in 1842 and settled there permanently once he was released from his military obligations. He became a drawing teacher and lithographer. He had probably been trained in this technique in France by one of the Devéria brothers. He started photography in the middle of the 1850's and published the Album de La Réunion, in several issues, mixing prints on albumen paper and lithographs. This work will be republished several times. The album presented here is a rare example of an original issue of the book, dedicated (but not signed) to the Minister of the Navy and Colonies.
