Aleksander ORLOWSKI (1777-1832) Self-Portrait [Autoportret], 1819 Watercolor and gouache. Signed and dated lower right. Annotated (in Polish) on the back. 17.4 x 12.5 cm Born in Warsaw, Orlowski took his first drawing lessons from Jean-Pierre Norblin thanks to the support of the Czartoryski. In 1794, he participated in the Kosciuszko Uprising. In 1802, he decided to leave for St. Petersburg where he worked for Constantin Pavlovitch and where he remained until his death. We know several self-portraits of the artist, including one dated 1800 in the National Museum in Warsaw (Min.602 MNW), and another dated 1820 in the Moscow Historical Museum (reproduced in Aleksander Orlowski, exhibition catalogue of the National Museum in Warsaw, 1957-1958, ill. 77, no. 647).
