[MADAGASCAR]. True and curious relations of the island of Madagascar, and of Brazil. With the History of the last War made in Brazil, between the Portuguese & the Dutch. Three relations of Egypt, & one of the Kingdom of Persia. Paris : Augustin Courbé, 1651. - 3 parts in one volume in-4, half-brown basane with corners, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges (20th century binding). Very rare first edition of this collection of travel reports, published in part by Claude-Barthélémy Morisot. It includes the following texts: - "Relation du voyage que François Cauche de Rouen a fait à Madagascar, Isles adjacentes, & coste d'Afrique, recueilly par le Sieur Morisot" . Includes an out-of-text map of Madagascar. This relation is followed by a part entitled: "De la Religion, mœurs, et façons de faire de ceux de l'Isle de Madagascar, Ensemble des Animaux qui y sont, & aux Isles voisines", and ends with a "Colloque entre le Madagascarois & le François sur les choses plus necessaires pour se faire entendre & estre entendu d'eux". - Relation du voyage de Roulox Baro, interprete et ambassadeur Ordinaire de la Compagnie des Indes d'Occident, de la part des Illustrissimes Seigneurs des Provinces Unies au pays des Tapuis dans la terre ferme du Brasil. Begun the third April 1647 & finished the fourteenth July of the same year. Translated from Dutch into French by Pierre Moreau de Paray en Charolois." - "History of the last troubles in Brazil. Between the Dutch and the Portuguese. By Pierre Moreau, native of the town of Parrey en Charollois."- Includes a folding map of Recife. - Three relations of Egypt, and other curious memoirs of the singularities of the said Country", namely: 1. "Relation of Sieur Cæsar Lambert de Marseille, of what he saw of more remarkable in Cairo, Alexandria & other Cities of Egypt in the years 1617, 1628, 1629 & 1632" - 2. "Estat de l'Ægypte, et des gouvernemens qui en depend, descrit par le sieur Jacques Albert 1634 " - 3. Estat des revenus d'Ægypte, par le sieur Santo Seguezzi 1635". - Relation d'un voyage de Perse faict es années 1598 & 1599. By a gentleman of the suite of Lord Scierley Ambassador of the King of England ". Copy in a modest 20th century binding. Rubbing from use, some spotting. Title lined. Missing two introductory leaves, leaves *1 and *4, corresponding to the beginning of the letter " To the reader " and to the " Table des Relation ". The texts of the relations are quite complete. Small loss at one corner of the map of Madagascar, affecting only the frame. The map of Recife has been lined and has stains as well as tears with lacks affecting the engraving. Modern annotations in pencil in some margins of the first relation. Scattered foxing and some rare wetness, the latter mainly concentrated at the end of the volume.
