MONTESQUIEU (Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron... - Lot 8 - Ader
MONTESQUIEU (Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de). On the spirit of the laws. Or of the relation that the laws must have with the constitution of each government, the customs, the climate, the religion, the trade, &c. New edition. Revised & corrected, with considerable changes given by the Author. Geneva : Barrillot & fils, 1749. - 3 volumes in-8, speckled calf, cold fillet on the boards, spine decorated with nerves, speckled edges (pastiche binding of the Laurenchet workshops). Uncommon in-8 edition, published one year after the original, of this theoretical political treatise, one of Montesquieu's major works, the result of more than ten years of work. "Distinguishing (...) three forms of government, the republic (democracy and aristocracy), the monarchy and despotism, Montesquieu founds modern political science by analyzing the form of each government in order to discover the laws proper, that is to say fundamental, to each one, and to deduce from them the positive laws that each of these governments must adopt" ("En français dans le texte"). Despite its success, the work was put on the index on November 29, 1751 and condemned by the Sorbonne. A good copy in a modern pastiche binding from the Laurenchet workshops. Scattered foxing. Provenance: Elisabeth Des Gouttes, with autograph signature on the titles of volumes 1 and 3 and on the reverse of the false title of volume 2.
