*NANI (Giambattista). History of the Republic... - Lot 9 - Ader
*NANI (Giambattista). History of the Republic of Venice. Cologne: Pierre Marteau, 1682; Amsterdam: Henri Schelte, 1702. - 2 parts in 4 volumes in-12, red morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, gilt lace inside, gilt edges (R. Raparlier). Second French edition of the first part published in 1682 and original edition of the second published 20 years later. This history of Venice, which runs from 1613 to 1671, was composed by the Venetian historian Giambattista Nani (1616-1678) who served from 1643 to 1668 as Venetian ambassador to France. This is his most important work, the first part of which was first published posthumously in 1679. The French translation of this part was given by the abbot Tallemant in 1679-1680, but with deleted or truncated passages. These passages were restored in this second edition of the translation, which makes it preferable to the first one. The second part appears here for the first time, translated by Masclary. The illustration consists of a title-frontispiece and 31 portraits, including that of the author, in the first part, and of a title-frontispiece, 24 portraits and a folding map in the second part. A fine copy bound by Raparlier, from the library of the Greek merchant and forger Dimítrios Rodokanákis (1840-1902). Some minor wear and tear to the spine and corners. Transfers of some engravings. Provenance: Dimítrios Rodokanákis, with his armorial bookplate. - G. J. Arvanitidi, with bookplate.
