SOLLEYSEL (Jacques de). Le Parfait maréchal, which teaches to know the beauty, the goodness and the defects of horses, the signs and the causes of the diseases; the means to prevent them; their cure, the good or bad use of the Purgation and the Bleeding. New edition of this famous work composed by Jacques de Solleysel (1617-1680), ordinary squire of the King's Great Stable, first published in 1664 and constantly republished throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Solleysel "was the first to lay the foundations of Hippology and Hippiatrics on serious data, and his book was the starting point for those who have treated these subjects, with incessant improvements up to the present day" (Mennessier de La Lance, II, 528). The edition includes the "Abrégé de l'art de monter à cheval" which does not appear in all reprints of the work. It is illustrated with a frontispiece as well as two folding plates and nearly 30 woodcut figures in the text and on full page, distributed at the end of the second part. A good copy in contemporary binding. Rubbing from use, some stains on the boards. Small wormholes without affecting the text.
