VULSON DE LA COLOMBIÈRE (Marc de). The illustrious... - Lot 13 - Ader
VULSON DE LA COLOMBIÈRE (Marc de). The illustrious men and great French captains who are painted in the gallery of the Palais Roayl. Together a summary of their lives & memorable actions. Paris : Charles de Sercy, 1690 - In-folio, half tan with corners, smooth spine, untrimmed (early 19th century binding). New edition of this beautiful work dedicated to historical figures, first published in 1650. The edition includes 27 plates, composed of the arms of Cardinal de Richelieu and portraits of Chancellor Séguier, dedicatee of the work, of Abbot Suger, of Count Simon de Montfort, of Gaucher de Châtillon, of Bertrand Du Guesclin, of Olivier de Clisson, of Jean II Le Meingre, of Jean d'Orléans comte de Dunois, of Joan of Arc, of Cardinal d'Amboise, of Louis de La Trémoille, Gaston de Foix, Pierre Terrail seigneur de Bayard, Charles de Cossé comte de Brissac, Anne de Montmorency, François de Lorraine, Charles de Lorraine, Blaise de Montluc, Armand de Gontaud baron de Biron, François de Bonne duc de Lesdiguieres, Henri IV, Marie de Médicis, cardinal de Richelieu, Louis XIII, Anne d'Autriche and Gaston d'Orléans. These portraits were drawn and engraved by Zacharie Heince (1611-1669) and François Bignon (1620?-16..). Each portrait is surrounded by small cartouches containing scenes from the life of the person represented or emblems. They are also accompanied by a brief biography by the historian Marc de Vulson de La Colombière. A COPY OF WHICH ALL ENGRAVINGS AND ORNAMENTS HAVE BEEN CAREFULLY COLORED AT THE TIME. It presents several defects. The binding, probably from the end of the 18th or the beginning of the 19th century, has been entirely restored, the spine and the corners having been redone and the endpapers replaced. The title is cut at the head with damage to the word "Les". Seven boards have tears on the gutter side edge, with occasional restorations and a few small tears. Restored tear to folio Aa1. Scattered foxing and traces of wetness on the edges of several leaves.
