*BALZAC (Honoré). Les Contes drolatiques... - Lot 15 - Ader
*BALZAC (Honoré). Les Contes drolatiques colligez ez abbayes de Touraine et mis en lumière par le sieur de Balzac pour l'esbattement des pantagruelistes et non aultres. Fifth edition illustrated with 425 drawings by Gustave Doré. Paris : Bureau de la société générale de librairie, 1855. - In-8, red half-chagrin, spine decorated, spotted edges (period binding). First illustrated edition, decorated with 425 compositions by Gustave Doré, engraved on wood by the best engravers of the time, Lavielle, Rouget, Brévière, Deghouy, Sotain and Piaud. This edition was published just after the last issue of Rabelais illustrated by Doré, and, like the latter work, it was not as successful as expected. The edition was therefore partly collected by the publisher Delahaye who sold it, taking care to change the address on the cover and putting the date of 1858 on it. the work was very quickly rehabilitated, and it is considered today as Gustave Doré's first masterpiece, gathering in a single volume all the romantic imagery through grotesque and delirious figures, a way for the artist to mock the infatuation of his contemporaries for the Middle Ages . A good copy in contemporary binding, second edition. Scattered foxing. Provenance : ex-libris Vallis Scholarium. - Bourlon de Rouvre, with ex-libris.
