*BEATTIE (W). The picturesque Waldensian valleys; or Protestant valleys of Piedmont, Dauphiné, and the Rock Ban. Translated from the English by L. de Bauclas. London: Georges Virtue; Paris: Ferrier, 1838. - In-4, eggplant morocco, special gilt irons and gilt fillet on the boards, smooth spine decorated, gilt edges (publisher's binding). First French edition, dedicated to Frederick William, king of Prussia, in the translation of L. de Bauclas. It is illustrated with a portrait of the author, the engraved title in English, dated 1837, 70 engraved plates by William Henry Bartlett and William Brockedon, as well as a folding map. A very fine copy in a publisher's binding decorated with special gilt irons, representing two historiated scenes, two trophies of arms and in the center a medallion held by two bearded men, inside which appears a candlestick surrounded by a star and the Latin motto "Lux lucet in tenebris". A very well preserved copy despite some wear and tear. Scattered foxing. Provenance : Bourlon de Rouvre, with ex-libris.
