NODIER (Charles). Journal de l'expédition... - Lot 43 - Ader
NODIER (Charles). Journal de l'expédition des Portes de fer. Paris : imprimerie royale, 1844. - Large in-8, publisher's bradel paper boards, smooth spine with brown morocco title page, untrimmed. First edition of this beautiful work printed by the Imprimerie Royale. Charles Nodier wrote it according to the notes of the Duke of Orleans, taken during his trip in 1839 in a barely pacified Africa. The illustration, entrusted to the best artists of the time, consists of an engraved map, 40 woodcut plates printed on glued China paper, with legends on tissue paper, and 200 vignettes in the text, engraved after Raffet, Decamps, Dauzats, etc. Not commercialized, the work was intended for the members of the royal family, the state personalities, the dignitaries of the Court, the officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers who took part in the expedition. It was published without cover. A copy as issued, in its edition cardboard, very well preserved despite some scattered foxing.
