François ROBERT (1737-1819) geographer. 5 L.A.S. (2 as "géographe ordinaire du Roi" and one as "ci-devant Géographe ordinaire du Roi"), [ca. 1780?]-1815, to the publisher Charles-Joseph Panckoucke or his collaborators; 8 1/2 pages in-4, 4 addresses. On his Encyclopédie méthodique. Géographie moderne (3 vols., Panckoucke, 1782-1788). To Charles-Joseph Panckoucke. September 27, 1780, to "I have just obtained in communication the archives, titles and charters of the famous Kingdom of Yvetot, article of Geography which had never been clarified, and I will give on it a completely new piece"; he intends to correct "gross faults" of the old encyclopedia... January 16, 1781: "The work to be done to the Geographic part of the Encyclopedie is triple, at least, of that on which I counted. Instead of a work to be corrected, to be retouched, it is a work to be remade"; he would thus like "to have the prospect of a copy of the Encyclopaedia"... May 13. On his steps to hurry up the production of their volumes; he quotes an extract of his proposal to the marquis de Villette to "provide in the Encyclop. the Ferney art"... 9 June 1781, to M. Plassant, asking him to send him the volume of the Encyclopedie in-8° where the article Neuchâtel is, and to join to it a proof of the prospectus of the Encyclopedie: "it is important that I review the article concerning my part"... May 24, 1815, to the bookseller Hector Agasse (son-in-law and associate of Panckoucke): "Following this uninterrupted series of upheavals which for 25 years have tormented the globe and in particular our Europe, our Geographical Dictionary of the Encyclopaedia will be found to be quite old: it will feel a great need to be rejuvenated"...
