Paul-Émile VICTOR (1907-1995) polar explorer.... - Lot 338 - Ader
Paul-Émile VICTOR (1907-1995) polar explorer. Signed typescript, Preliminary Report of the French Scientific Expedition to the East Coast of Greenland (1934-1935), Reykjavik (Iceland) September 2, 1935; 7 pp. in-4 mimeographed and stapled. Paul-Émile Victor's first polar exploration. Paul-Émile Victor (1907-1995) had long been fascinated by adventure stories and explorations and organized his first polar expedition in 1934. Embarked on the Pourquoi-Pas? of Commander Charcot, he left Saint-Servan on July 11, 1934, passed through Iceland and disembarked on August 25, 1934, at Angmagssalik, on the east coast of Greenland, with his three companions: Robert Gessen, a physician, Michel Perez, a geologist and Fred Matter-Steveniers, a filmmaker. During one year, the four explorers travelled through Greenland where they made numerous scientific and medical observations. In his report, Victor gives a summary of the expedition: installation of the mission on the base camp, first contacts with the Inuit, travel by sled or boat, learning the language of the country, etc. Then he details the work carried out: the mission was carried out in the Greenlandic territory, the Inuit were the only ones to be able to speak the language, and they were the only ones to be able to speak the language. Then he details the work carried out: Ethnography (collection of objects and instruments, investigations on the life of the inhabitants, realization of discs, photographs and films); Anthropology and physiology (study of measurements, basal metabolism, blood groups, diseases...); Geography, Geology and Meteorology (establishment of maps, exploration of an unknown area, collection of mineralogical samples, meteorological observations, aurora borealis...). This text was published in Boréal et Banquise by Paul-Émile Victor (Paris, Bernard Grasset, 1938-1939). Two press articles are attached: the first, written by Robert Gessen, relates this expedition (Paris-Soir, November 4, 1935); the second, by Robert Pommier, is devoted to a later mission of Paul-Émile Victor to Terre-Adélie (Le Figaro, March 19, 1956).
